Jonathan ‘Joe Blacula’ Whitaker’s love for the culture of hip hop began when he first heard the self titled debut album “RUN-DMC”. To this day, he subconsciously emulates the iconic role models with his love for shell toe adidas and black leather jackets. It didn’t take long for a young ‘JB” (A childhood abbreviation that he adopted from his grandmother) to realize that he wanted to command an audience in the same way as the legends, but not in a blunt role as the two microphone controllers. He studied how Jam Master Jay used the turntable as an instrument and in time perfected scratch routines that he had seen JMJ perform on recorded footage.
As JB grew as a dj, he connected himself with longtime friend MC Sean B (currently Yung Felon) and the two formed the duo Armed and Dangerous. Always wanting to upgrade his God given talents, he followed the natural progression of the dj and moved into production. These talents, along with
the neighborhood parties that JB would host on the weekends for loose
change, caught the attention of another young mc/producer by the name of
The Legendary Traxster. JB joined Traxster’s group L.O.C. (Land of Confusion)
and the two began planting the seeds of what is now considered the blueprint
of the true Chicago/Midwest gangsta sound.
In time, their production talents grew too large to contain under the constant expansion of the L.O.C. umbrella. The two parted ways and have remained friends to this day. JB focused on fine tuning Armed and Dangerous upon which the addition of mc’s Mr. Grizzly and Ron Ill, became the Shysta Coalition. When the landmark cd ‘The Chronic’ was released, it changed the entire landscaped of rap music and JB had to change with it.
Roy Hamilton, a musician/producer/engineer, befriended JB and taught him
how to reroute the skills he had acquired playing the clarinet into mastering the keyboard. Also, taking from JB’s know how of selecting and editing samples, Roy helped use this to fine tune JB’s ear. With his gained knowledge and Roy Hamilton’s guidance, JB had the confidence to organize the underdog artists he had acquired and focus on making them complete artists.
But what would he name his new creation??
JB searched for a name that represented toughness, durability, attitude and confidence. A name that was subtle but kept your attention. One that had the ability to bend but NEVER be broken! These are the qualities of the material known as Teflon. By making a change to the spelling and adding ‘recordings’ to represent a broader spectrum of the limited term ‘records,’ JB now had more than just a name to his production company, but a direction for his dream.
