Career Control 2

Recently I came across another interesting article http://tinyurl.com/lfwpj9 about how artists/bands can circumvent record labels and traditional music business models and make money themselves through the use of social media. Although the concepts seem logical and forthcoming the sad reality is there are unfortunately several common counter-arguments.

First of all, some artists, musicians and bands simply don’t want to waste their time doing all of that. Some are unable to do it.… Continue

Image is Everything...

Many talented emerging artists are confused by the issue of an image and don't have a sense of their own style. So, they either copy things from other people, or are just bland. Few artists actually have a true, distinct style. In today's entertainment environment, the first impression is as important as ever. However, style is only one aspect of an artist's first impression.

My theory for building a compelling image is that you have to look within, harness what really makes you… Continue

Maximizng Your Music Mojo

Every musician/artists has, at least, two methods he (or she) can use to proactively earn an income, yet, most only utilize one method. As an example, most artists utilize performing as their primary source of income.

And, while many artists do have recordings, their recorded music is generally treated as an "aftermarket" product. Or, more clearly, a product that is left to defend itself in the income producing arena.

So, in an effort to apprise you of more areas that you… Continue

Wait...Before You Drop That Album....

The following checklist is in no particular order, but here are 10 important things you should do before you release your album:

1. If you are hiring musicians (background singers, instrumentalists, etc.) to play on your album, you will need to make sure they fill out a musicians release agreement or talent release form. This agreement is not necessary for musicians that own their own record label, are performing on their own albums, and will pay for and release the albums… Continue

Declaring Independence...

As an independent artist you will find that many experts in the music industry will be more than happy to feed you great morsels of advice. Often they will present this advice as a “reality check” or a “wake-up call” to dispel any naïve misconceptions you may have about establishing your career. Unfortunately this advice can sometimes be exactly what a budding artist does NOT need.

The truth is that all around the world, wherever you look there are people making music who are… Continue

Take Me Seriously...

What I want to address here is the power of professional package submission. All too many artists will literally throw something together and hope for the best. Kind of like throwing mud against the wall. A poorly put together package reeks of laziness - a trait that no artist can possibly expect to live with today. It's just too competitive. If YOUR’E not serious how can you expect any music industry person to take you seriously?

So please take this aspect of the business… Continue

Bridge Burning...

It truly is a jungle out there filled with: snakes, rats, sheep, lions, wolves, sharks…well, you get the picture. In the course of your musical journey, there will be confrontations, arguments, misunderstandings, and miscommunications. You’ll get jerked around, ripped off and disrespected. So, you want to be a star? Welcome to your nightmare.

But this is also a business of good people, who’ll give you opportunities and chances and help you out when you least expect it. That’s why… Continue

Artist Development & Product Development (Part 2)

Product Development: Create and Sell Your Music

Product Development is about preparing your music product for the marketplace, and finding ways to sell it. Product Development issues become much easier to deal with when all the details addressed in Artist Development have been taken care of. Not all artist/acts take the time to deal with these responsibilities. They prefer to rush the songwriting process and move right into the recording studio, in their eagerness to get their… Continue
