About Me:
born 1957 in london uk
moved to berlin germany 1988

first musical influences:
swinging 60s pop radio and 60s soul music.
the radio was always on somewhere, and my father who was a painter worked out of his home studio to a soundtrack of motown, stax and atlantic that he edited out of hours of recordings of various radio shows.two of his favorites were otis redding an ray charles.

later ska reggae played a big role, when it stormed up the uk pop charts in the late 1960s having been embraced as an essential soundtrack by the the youth subculture of the day, along side soulmusic that together with bluebeat was the music of choice of the uk mods a few years earlier.

the first record i bought was "54 46 was my number" by toots and the maytals, a trojan 7", the second was "sweet soul music" by arthur connely, an atlantic 7". after that it was reggae chartbuster and motown chartbuster lps, and the pop influence,s got me keen on t.rex, slade, bowie and roxy music. northern soul, disco and street funk played a role later on as did various aspects of rock, between 72 and 76, then punk and reggae took over as the musics where the cutting edge was, post punk, militant funk, proto house, rap and electro, house music all night long and so on to the present day. the live shows that changed my life forever were by t.rex, david bowie, roxy music, the ramones, the sex pistols, king sunny ade and his african beats, fela kuti and public enemy, more or less in that order... i believe that fela and king sunny, with the benefit of hindsight, were one of the major contributing factors as to why uk youth culture moved from 4 piece rock bands to rave. everyone who saw them became aware of the non stop dance idea in a way that was never before apparent to a whole generation. no one could become a master musician like those guys, in less than decades of dedication to an instrument, but the djs of the day could deliver something similar ...not only, but definatly also .a major influence in the evolution of my own dj story ..

my first club gig was in billys, soho london, between sets by a post punk band that i was playing rhythm guitar and some percussion for. that was 79, and the selection was a mix of motown ( ie, undisputed truth - hole in the wall / big john ), reggae ( ie mighty diamonds / mr body guard , big youth / dread locks dread ) and punk+post punk ( ie spizz energy, joy division,). over the next 5 or 6 years , my band involvement got less, my involvement with dance and djing got more, and in 1987 i was offered a residency in londons limelight club. around the same time i was offered gigs in berlin germany, and after a visit to check it out, moved to berlin in may 88.
